How to Create an SRT File from a Video

By NUR Technologies · · 4 min read

An SRT file is a plain-text list of subtitles with times, which players and platforms can show on top of a video. Here is what is inside one and how to make one without typing it all by hand.

What is inside an SRT file

It is a text file made of numbered blocks. Each block has a number, a time range such as 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500 (start and end), and the line of text to show. Blocks are separated by a blank line. You can open an SRT in any text editor.

Why create one

  • Many platforms let you upload an SRT so viewers can turn captions on or off.
  • You can translate the text and keep the same timing.
  • You keep a searchable text version of what was said.
