How to Convert WAV to MP3 on Mac
WAV files are large and uncompressed. MP3 files are much smaller and play everywhere. Here is how to convert on a Mac, and one trap: Finder’s own audio encoder does not make MP3s.
Option 1: the Music app (free, built in)
- Set MP3 as the encoderOpen the Music app, then Settings > Files > Import Settings, and choose the MP3 Encoder.
- Add the WAV filesDrag the files into your Music library.
- ConvertSelect them and choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version. The MP3 copies appear next to the originals.
Note: Finder’s right-click action “Encode Selected Audio Files” offers formats like AAC and Apple Lossless, not MP3. If you need MP3 specifically, use the Music app or another converter.
Option 2: Simple Archive Converter
Simple Archive Converter converts audio between common formats, along with images and documents. Drop in the files, pick the output format and convert, all on your Mac. Check its page for the list of formats.
- Drop the audio filesDrag your WAV files into the window.
- Choose the output formatPick the format you need.
- ConvertStart the conversion and save the results.
FAQ

Can Finder make MP3s?
Finder’s Encode action offers AAC and Apple Lossless, not MP3. Use the Music app or a converter.
What does Simple Archive Converter need?
macOS 14 or later.
